Congenital scoliosis

Congenital scoliosis develops before birth and is caused by a defect in the formation of the spinal column. Either parts of the vertebrae are missing or vertebrae fail to separate, leading to asymmetry (ie, the spine becomes curved).
For further information about congenital scoliosis, including cause, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, please download our comprehensive advice sheet (PDF 48KB). There is also an account of what it is like to have congenital scoliosis, which can be found in our personal accounts section.
If you would like to talk further about any aspect of scoliosis, SAUK is here to help; please call our helpline or contact us via post or e-mail.
