Pilates

Developed over 90 years ago by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, this style of body conditioning is today recognised as an integral part of exercise physiology. Termed the art of contrology (control) this system is designed to use body and mind in unison, with the patient exercising maximum control using breathing and muscular work throughout.

Invented during the First World War, Pilates developed simple exercises designed to strengthen muscles while maintaining length and flexibility. Additionally, Pilates developed spring-loaded mechanisms to help to rehabilitate fellow internees after injury. This method was revolutionary at the time and formed the basis on which today’s techniques were built. In particular, during the 1918 flu epidemic Pilates managed to keep his comrades healthy by working with them to create internal strength through balance of body and mind.  Pilates set up his first studio in New York City after he immigrated to the USA in 1926. This start created a nucleus from which word has progressively spread over the years, as people have found out through self-discovery that his methods create awareness of postural problems and corrective techniques to both prevent and cure their ailments.

It is important to remember that Pilates will simply help to strengthen and exercise muscles.  This strengthening can help to ease pain but it is not a form of correction for scoliosis.  If possible it is best to choose private Pilates tuition designed for people with scoliosis, which will be more effective than general Pilates tuition.
